Amadou Tarnteh Engages Top Diplomats Over Alleged Arbitrary Arrests of Civilians in Ndop By Lasha Kingsly Chair of Conscience Africaine NGO and frontline human rights defender, Amadou Tarnteh, has raised alarm bells over worsening rights violations in the Anglophone regions, drawing the attention of key international diplomats during the Human Rights Defenders of the Year Award ceremony at the Canadian Residence in Yaoundé on December 10, 2025. Tarnteh, who was invited by the Canadian High Commissioner, H.E. Marie-Claude Hervey, used sideline discussions to brief diplomats — including the EU Ambassador, H.E. Jean-Marc Chataigner, and the U.S. Ambassador, H.E. Christopher J. Lamora — on what he described as “deepening humanitarian distress” in conflict-hit communities. He recounted the chilling case of two newborn babies, their mothers, grandmother, aunt, and uncle, who were rounded up on June 24, 2025, by defence and security forces on the instructions of the Senior Divisional Officer for Ngoketunjia, Kongeh Handerson Quetong. The family was detained at the Ndop Gendarmerie Brigade where, according to Tarnteh, Madam Woh Sera and Weyang Julius were “brutally tortured” before being transferred three weeks later to the Bamenda Central Prison. They are said to be languishing in deplorable conditions, allegedly punished for offences committed by a relative believed to be a separatist fighter. The diplomats, reports say, listened with keen attention and expressed their commitment to accompany ongoing advocacy efforts aimed at addressing the disturbing situation. Tarnteh maintains that Conscience Africaine NGO will not relent in pushing for justice, protection, and respect for the rights of all citizens caught in the crossfire of the prolonged conflict.

Towards Lasting Peace in Cameroon’s Anglophone Regions: A Framework for Justice, Dialogue, and Human Rights Executive Summary: This proposal outlines a comprehensive framework for achieving lasting peace in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions, addressing the root causes of the conflict, and promoting justice, human rights, and democracy. The framework builds on existing initiatives and proposes concrete steps for inclusive dialogue, transitional justice, and human rights protection. Context and Rationale: Cameroon’s Anglophone crisis, fueled by historical marginalization and socio-economic disparities, has led to widespread human rights abuses and violence. The conflict has resulted in significant human suffering, displacement, and economic losses. Addressing the crisis requires a holistic approach that prioritizes justice, dialogue, and human rights. Key Elements for Achieving Justice and Peace: 1. Transitional Justice: Addressing past human rights abuses through accountability, reparations, and reconciliation to heal wounds and promote national unity. 2. Judicial Independence: Strengthening the judiciary to ensure impartiality and accountability, upholding the rule of law and human rights. 3. Inclusive Dialogue: Encouraging dialogue among stakeholders, including government, separatists, religious leaders, and civil society, to address grievances and build trust. 4. Human Rights Protection: Ensuring protection for activists, journalists, and vulnerable populations to promote democracy and accountability. Initiatives Promoting Peace and Justice: 1. National Dialogue: Building on government-led initiatives, such as the Major National Dialogue, to promote inclusive dialogue and address grievances. 2. Cameroon Human Rights Commission: Strengthening the Commission’s role in promoting and protecting human rights, addressing allegations of torture and abuse. 3. Civil Society Organizations: Supporting organizations like Conscience Africaine, CHRADA, REDHAC, NDH, and Mandela Center International in advocating for human rights and providing support to victims. 4. United Nations Support: Collaborating with the UN to promote peace, justice, and human rights in Cameroon, including the Peace and Reintegration Project. Proposed Strategies and Actions: 1. Establish a multi-stakeholder dialogue platform to address grievances and build trust. 2. Support transitional justice mechanisms, including truth-telling and reparations. 3. Strengthen judicial independence and accountability. 4. Enhance human rights protection and promotion. 5. Provide support to victims and affected communities. Expected Outcomes: 1. Reduced violence and human rights abuses. 2. Improved trust and dialogue among stakeholders. 3. Enhanced justice and accountability. 4. Increased human rights protection and promotion. Timeline: Short-term (6-12 months): Establish dialogue platform, support transitional justice mechanisms, and enhance human rights protection. Medium-term (1-2 years): Strengthen judicial independence, promote inclusive dialogue, and support victims. Long-term (2-5 years): Consolidate peace, promote national unity, and ensure sustainable development. *Resources and Budget:* This proposal will be implemented through a collaborative effort involving government, civil society, and international partners. A detailed budget will be developed to support the proposed strategies and actions. Conclusion: Achieving lasting peace in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions requires a comprehensive and inclusive approach. This framework provides a foundation for promoting justice, dialogue, and human rights. We believe that with commitment and collaboration, a peaceful and prosperous future is possible for all Cameroonians. Proposal by Amadu TARNTEH, Human Rights Defender/ Peace Crusader
